Other Comments
The lush 18-hole signature The Rise Golf Club is carved from rugged rock, weaving through wetlands perched 400-metres above Lake Okanagan. The only Fred Couples signature golf course in the Okanagan Valley was nominated for ‘Best New Course in Canada’ in 2009 by Score Golf magazine. After feeding your appetite for the great outdoors, refuel at a patio, pub, chalet, or restaurant. Locally-grown food is a key ingredient to a tasty breakfast, lunch or dinner in Vernon. Walking through downtown Vernon is like strolling through a life-sized art gallery. Twenty-seven murals bring the sides of buildings alive with images of Vernon’s development as a centre of recreation, agriculture and culture. It’s possible to take a guided walking tour, but it’s also a joy for individuals to explore this year-round exhibition of outdoor art alone. The ‘Cowboys’ mural at 30th Avenue depicts a tired rancher resting a fence and watching his herd of beef cattle. Just over on 32nd Avenue, one can learn the humble beginnings of Sovereign Lake as a world-class nordic ski centre. Gigantic scenes of life on the Shuswap River as well as Kalamalka and Okanagan lakes make it easy to understand why fishers, sailboats and swimmers love to play in Vernon. Visitors to Vernon can learn to nurture and appreciate the fruits of nature at its many farms and attractions. Panning for gold, digging for opals and picking tomatoes are three rewarding ways for visitors to harvest a piece of Vernon to bring home. Take a tour and watch Honeybees weave their magic, green thumbs do their work and bakers add their touches: follow the trail of honey, fruits and treats around Vernon. Locally made Italian prune or raspberry spirits can be bought at the liquor store; hot buttered corn can be munched after a horseback or farm wagon tour. Life-sized murals throughout the city tell a story of Vernon’s three pristine lakes and rugged ranching landscape; they also reveal the roots of Vernon’s growth as a year-round outdoor recreation playground.
